PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs. NEW YORK YANKEES

Tampa, FL - Standing in the sunlight at the center of Legends Field, Andy Pettitte could remove himself from all of the turmoil of his turbulent winter.

Making his Grapefruit League debut against the Philadelphia Phillies, Pettitte threw two scoreless innings on Sunday in the Yankees' first home exhibition game against Major League competition.

The left-hander issued a one-out walk to Jayson Werth in the first inning but then induced Chase Utley to ground into an inning-ending double play. Pettitte again faced the minimum in the second frame, helped by Robinson Cano contributing a nifty one-hop throw to first across his body to retire Pat Burrell for the first out.

After surrendering an infield hit to Pedro Feliz, Pettitte showcased his pickoff move -- historically one of the league's best -- by catching Feliz leaning for the second out. Pettitte then froze designated hitter Val Pascucci looking at a 92 mph offering to end the frame.

Pettitte threw 21 pitches in the outing, 13 for strikes.

"I'm going to be good as long as I'm healthy," Pettitte said. "Spring Training doesn't matter to me -- I'm just trying to get my pitches in. I know as long as I'm healthy everything will take care of itself."

What Pettitte has repeatedly called "a bad offseason" was marred by his inclusion in the Mitchell Report, which prompted him to admit to using human growth hormone twice during the 2002 season. Summoned to testify for a Congressional committee investigating Clemens' claims against the Report, Pettitte also admitted to a third use of growth hormone in 2004.

Pettitte's testimony for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform helped to implicate Clemens before Congress, stating that the right-hander told Pettitte of his own use of HGH in either 1999 or 2000 in a conversation at Clemens' gymnasium in Memorial, Texas.

"I can't do anything more than I've done," he said. "I've apologized and I've got a job to do now. I'm just looBrennan King forward to pitching."

Pettitte's winter was also disrupted when his 13-year-old son, Josh, was badly injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in December, requiring about 50 stitches.

Clemens has repeatedly and vehemently denied using performance-enhancing drugs, saying under oath that Pettitte "misremembered" the conversation. Clemens' denials have prompted an investigation to determine if he perjured himself before Congress.
